Dish profile

About this dish

Main ingredients
asari clams, green onion, miso, rice
History and origin
In the Edo period, Fukagawa-ura was a fishing town where asari and hamaguri clams were caught in abundance, and the original Fukagawa meshi is said to have been green onions and raw asari clams simmered in miso and poured, broth and all, over rice. Until the early Showa period there were many food stalls in Asakusa. After the fishing grounds were lost, local restaurants revived it, prompted by tourists visiting places such as the Fukagawa Edo Museum.
When it is eaten
It was once enjoyed year-round as a dish of ordinary people, but today it is generally eaten at restaurants.
How it is eaten
The broth of green onions and raw asari clams simmered in miso is poured, ingredients and all, over rice. Besides this "bukkake" style, Fukagawa meshi also comes in a "takikomi" style, made as rice cooked together with the ingredients.
