Dish profile

About this dish

Main ingredients
round mochi, white miso, daikon, carrot, taro
History and origin
Zoni is said to have already been eaten by the Muromachi period, and it reportedly spread to ordinary people in the Edo period. In Osaka and elsewhere in Kansai, zoni with round mochi and white miso is popular, and round ingredients carry the auspicious wish for harmony "without sharp corners." At New Year, slender zoni daikon and Kintoki carrots, a traditional vegetable, line the shop shelves.
When it is eaten
A New Year ceremonial food. It is said to be a custom, so that people do not tire of it, to make it with white miso on New Year's Day and switch to a clear soy sauce-based soup on the second day.
How it is eaten
Sliced rounds of daikon and carrot and peeled taro are simmered in dashi, white miso is dissolved in, and round mochi is added and simmered briefly to finish.
