Dish profile
About this dish
- Main ingredients
- rice, ground meat, lettuce, cheese, tomato, salsa
- History and origin
- It is said to have begun around 1984, when the owner of an eatery in Kin, a town in central Okinawa Island, came up with putting taco fillings on white rice to give soldiers from the nearby U.S. military base Camp Hansen a cheap, filling meal. Its popularity spread to diners and bento shops throughout Okinawa, and in the 1990s it also appeared in school lunches.
- When it is eaten
- It also appears in Okinawan school lunches and convenience-store bento. Each household enjoys it with its own variations, such as topping it with egg or avocado or adjusting the spiciness.
- How it is eaten
- Rice is served on a plate and layered with taco meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and so on, then eaten with a red tomato-based salsa poured over it. Casual diners and bento shops sometimes use ketchup instead.
