Ando Jozo Main Store, Kakunodate

05 Akita

A miso and soy sauce maker in the merchant quarter of Kakunodate. It traces its founding to an 1853 inscription on a miso vat, and a sign reading "Hitachi-den ki-joyu" recalls that it studied brewing in Hitachi. The main store, rebuilt in 1883, keeps its look from that time with traces of townhouse construction. Its brick storehouse contains a reception room, and as the oldest brick storehouse in Tohoku it is a tangible cultural property designated by Semboku City.
