Miyagi Traditional Kokeshi

Wooden dolls said to have begun after the mid-Edo period as hot-spring souvenirs in the Tohoku region; Miyagi has five traditional styles, Naruko, Sakunami, Togatta, Yajiro and Hijiori, whose heads and bodies are shaved with a plane on a spinning lathe before the face and body designs are painted.
