Takayama Sanmachi Sake Breweries

In the Sanmachi preservation district, the southern half of the old castle town, townhouses from the late Edo to the Meiji era line narrow streets, and five sake breweries dating from the Edo or Meiji periods support Takayama's sake culture. Most of the area burned in 1832, but the houses were rebuilt on the same lots in the traditional style. They have low, deep eaves, with whitewashed bracket beams and raw-lacquered beams above the earthen passages.
