Dish profile

About this dish

Main ingredients
Rice, curry, cheese, egg
History and origin
Mojiko, which prospered as a trading port from the Meiji era to the early Showa era, had many Western-style restaurants, and fashionable Western-inspired dishes are said to have been born there. An anecdote holds that it began in the Showa 30s (1955–1964) when a Japanese restaurant in Mojiko poured curry into an earthenware pot and baked it in the oven like a gratin. In 2007, the restaurants serving it founded the "Mojiko Yaki Curry Club."
When it is eaten
It is a standard lunch when visiting Mojiko Retro, and restaurants serving it line the area near Mojiko Station. It is said to have also spread as a home dish.
How it is eaten
The baked, melted cheese and soft-cooked egg are mixed into the spiced curry as you eat. Besides plain white rice, some restaurants use butter rice or dry curry, and some top it with fugu or octopus.
