Nanbu Shuzojo (Hanagaki)

18 Fukui

Founded in 1733 in Shichiken, Ono, as Chanokiya, a hardware merchant to the Ono domain, the business turned to sake in 1901 after repeated great fires in the town. Its sake, likened to an avenue of cherry trees in full bloom, was named Hanagaki, a hedge of flowers. Shichiken street was once lined with sake shops, and the brewery's Meiji-era shop on its corner with Yonban street is a registered tangible cultural property, with a tower-like roof as a landmark.
